Learn the hidden meanings of the carving that decorate our ancestors' gravestones. The symbols range from period decorative arts to membership in organizations. The program will also give a basic history on the type and styles of grave markers used in Wisconsin cemeteries; along with when they were produced. There are even a few surprises that can be found when walking in cemeteries.
Dennis Jacobs is an employee of the Brown County Library in the Local History and Genealogy Department. He has had an interest in cemeteries from a young age. Oftentimes as a young man, he would ride his bike to Holy Cross Cemetery in Bay Settlement to visit his grandfather's grave. While in the cemetery, he would take notebook paper and a crayon to do rubbings from the stones. Today you can find Dennis indexing Civil War graves for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, in which he is a member and currently the Camp Commander of Old Abe Camp 8 from the Fox Valley.
