We are excited to announce a new initiative we are working on. The initiative, called Books Build Community, focuses on sharing experiences around a specific book, through formal book clubs and informal book discussions in living rooms, workplaces and around town.
Books Build Community is based off of the successful Fox Cities Reads initiative, where we select a book to build a conversation around. As with Fox Cities Reads, we will also host various classes and events tied to the book, for further conversation and community building.
Our first selection is I Didn’t Know There Were Latinos in Wisconsin: Three Decades of Hispanic Writing, an anthology of essays, poetry, memoirs and fiction by Wisconsin Latina and Latino writers. This book contains over 70 contributions illustrating the rich diversity of Latina and Latino experiences in this state. You will encounter the works of 40 writers who are past poet laureates, musicians, academics, activists, law enforcement agents, educators and much more. The collection is tied together by editor and contributor, Oscar Mireles.
Books are now available on our first floor, stop in and check one out, or put your copy on hold. Check back, as we will have more information about upcoming events.
Books Build Community is made possible by generous grants from the Bemis Company Foundation and Friends of Appleton Public Library.
