Adult Learners @ APL

Fall 2016

Appleton Public Library is starting a lifelong learning network for seasoned adults over 50 starting in the fall of 2016.

Adult Learners @ APL will experience free educational offerings

Join us for a speaker and lecture series, field trips, and short courses.

Funding provided by the Friends of Appleton Public Library.

 

Our Presenters:

 Michael Eckers is the author of several books on American military history.
His public speaking focuses on the contributions and sacrifices made by people in defense of our freedoms.  Michael presents interactive talks combining nation-wide perspective with local flavor.

 Gustavo Faresis a native of Argentina.  He is a Professor of Spanish and Co-Advisor of the Latin American Studies Program at Lawrence University. 

 Bob Schmall is an Appleton resident with a master’s degree in history. He is also a lifelong amateur astronomer and has lectured extensively on both subjects around southeastern Wisconsin.

 

September 14              3-4 pm                       World War II: The Home Front

Eckers will speak about those who served in action as well as civilians at home. Without their sacrifices, the War could not have been won. He will speak about scrap drives, rationing, Meatless Tuesdays, war bonds, and more. Presented by Michael Eckers

September 14             6:30-7:30 pm              Non-fiction Book Discussion

Come discuss American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House by Jon Meacham. Discussion led by Dick & Germaine Millard.

September 15             7-8 pm                                   The Peace of Wild Things:TheHistory of the Horicon Marsh

It has been flooded and drained, and its birds slaughtered. It has been drained again and farmed and set afire—and then restored as a national treasure. This is the wild story of a wild place, told by a historian. Presented by Bob Schmall

October 6, 13, 20, 27 7-8 pm                                     The American Revolution, 1765 to 1787

Learn many of the things you may not know about the creation of our country, the world’s first national representative democracy. Presented  by Bob Schmall

November 3   7-8 pm                                   Origins of the Solar System

The science behind the formation of the earth, moon and planets. Did you know that themoon is leaving us? Get the answer from a NASA Solar System ambassador. Presented by Bob Schmall

 

November 10 7-8 pm                                   The Mars Missions

The search for signs of life on another world. Can we get there in person? Get the answer from a NASA Solar System Ambassador.    Presented  by Bob Schmall

 

November 12, December 10  2-3:30 pm      Find your Ancestors Series

Guest speakers will talk about a genealogy topics.

 

November 22  7-8 pm                                   Latin American Visual Arts

Explore some of the main contemporary tendencies in Latin American visual arts. Presented by Gustavo Fares, our November-December Artist-in-Residence.
